When response of a system which is subjected to earthquake excitations are theoretically obtained, analysis method for nonstationary random process should be used. However, if some stationary approximation can be applied, analysis becomes easy. In this paper, effectiveness of a stationary approximation is examined. Mean square response of a system subjected to nonstationary white noise is obtained by theoretical method. The maximum value of mean square response obtained by stationary approximation becomes greater than that by nonstationary analysis, when damping ratio decreases and natural period becomes longer. The stationary approximation method gives exact value of integral of mean square response with respect to time. Then, stationary approximation is applied to the secondary system.
