ƒ^ƒCƒgƒ‹i‰pjF PRACTICAL METHOD FOR EVALUATING KINEMATIC STRESSES IN PILES
´˜^i‰pjF Dynamic stresses in a pile comprise inertial ƒÐ¡ and kinematic ƒÐ¡ stresses. This paper describes a practical method for evaluating the latter stresses ƒÐ¡ when the maximum acceleration of a design earthquake is given at the ground surface. The subsoil response, which is required to evaluate ƒÐ¡, is determined from the first natural period and the modal-damping factor of the subsoil, incorporating nonlinear characteristics. The applicability of the proposed method is examined in comparison with a more rigorous method. The comparative studies show that ƒÐ¡ and the non-linear behaviors obtained by the proposed method agree well with the rigorous analysis results. The applicability of the proposed method is confirmed from the viewpoint of practical seismic design of a pile.
