著者らの研究グループは，建物基礎などの地中構造物が存在しない地盤での側方流動の事例分析，液状化土を非線形流体と見なした場合の相似則および模型地盤の流動実験にもとづき，傾斜地盤の地表面変位の予測式を提案している．本研究は，1964年新潟地震における新潟駅周辺の市街地および1995年兵庫県南部地震における神戸市，西宮市の住宅地で発生した側方流動の事例分析を行い，建物基礎などの存在がその地域の側方流動量を大幅に低減させることを明らかにしたものである．

The authors had already proposed a formula for prediction of horizontal displacement of sloped ground due to liquefaction-induced flow, based on case studies on past earthquakes, a similitude law of ground flow and shaking table tests. This formula is available for the prediction of the ground displacement of areas where no underground structures such as basements and foundation piles of structures exist. In this paper, the authors conducted case studies on the liquefaction-induced ground displacement in areas where there were many buildings with foundations during the 1964 Niigata and 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquakes, and discussed the effects of the existence of underground structures on the magnitude of the ground displacement.
