´˜^i‰pjF It is one of the hard tasks to obtain precisely the seismic responses of the soil ground having topographic irregularities. The present investigation is concerned with the transient behavior of layered media bounded partly and its analyzing procedure on the base of the characteristic method in the 3-dimensional space as well as in the time domain. The characteristic treatment is developed on the math-ematical planes extended over the invisible 4-dimensional time and spatial field, while it is supported by the physical meanings of phase velocities.
