ƒ^ƒCƒgƒ‹i‰pjF RELATION OF HUMAN CASUALTY AND SEISMIC INTENSITY IN THE 2000 TOTTORI-KEN-SEIBU AND THE 2001 GEIYO EARTHQUAKES
´˜^i‰pjF This study examined human casualty occurrence ratio vs. seismic intensity in the 2000 Tottori-ken-seibu and the 2001 Geiyo earthquakes. Casualty ratio of the two earthquakes were found lower than the 1993 Kushiro and the 1994 Hokkaido Toho-oki earthquakes. Questionnaire intensities behaved as better parameter to explain casualty ratio than instrumental intensities. Preparing database of casualty cases, cause, location, age and sex distribution of casualty were compared. In case of the Geiyo earthquake, which occurred Saturday afternoon, casualty in shopping centers, work places were more frequent. Elderly women are more susceptible to injury as in other earthquakes. School children and male of middle ages also indicated higher casualty. Standardized definition and survey method is important for better understanding of human casualty occurrence and its mitigation.
