ƒ^ƒCƒgƒ‹i‰pjF Disaster Response and Relief in Atico, Peru Earthquake -Consideration of Disaster Mitigation in Cold Season and Medical Problems-
´˜^i‰pjF Peru is situated at the point where the Pacific tectonic plate (Nazca plate) and the South American plate collide. As the 3rd largest country in South America, on its north it is bordered by Ecuador and Colombia, on the east by Brazil and Bolivia, and on the south by Chile. The entire west side of Peru is bordered by the Pacific Ocean. Peru's size is 1,285,215 sq. km (496,095 sq. miles) and the altitude height is over 6000 meters. Atico Earthquake occurred off the coast of southern part and epicenter was near to Chile at 4:33 PM EDT on June 23, 2001 (3:33 PM local time in Peru). Although the moment magnitude of this earthquake was revised to 8.4, human damage was not so severe as expected by comparing with so-called big scale earthquake. In July 2001, members of JSCE (Japan Society of Civil Engineers) reconnaissance team were dispatched to Peru and author analyzed the emergency response by Peruvian Red Cross, perspective on medical topics, and countermeasure with consideration to winter time are discussed in this paper.
