This study aimed at improving the performance of the seismic warning rules of railway trains. In the current rules, peak ground acceleration (PGA) has been most commonly used as the intensity of earthquake ground motion which triggers the warning actions. These rules, however, tend to cause frequent false alarms. Spectral Intensity (SI) was addressed here as an alternative seismic measure and the effectiveness of a new warning rule based on SI was investigated using earthquake observation data and structural damage records. The results indicated that significant reduction of false alarms is expected by use of SI instead of PGA.
