The seismometer network of Japanese expressway system has been enhanced since the 1995 Kobe earthquake. Using earthquake information from the instruments, the expressways are closed. However, recent studies have revealed that expressway structures are not seriously damaged under seismic excitation of the current regulation level. Hence, we may think of relaxing the regulation of expressway closure. Before doing this, we need to examine the effects of shaking to automobiles on expressways. In this study, the control system of the driving simulator was modified so as to apply the seismically induced vehicle motions to its actuators then some virtual tests on driving a vehicle on expressway during an earthquake were conducted.
