ƒ^ƒCƒgƒ‹i‰pjF PARTICIPATORY COMMUNITY BASED DISASTER MANAGEMENT: AN EXAMPLE FROM THE KATHMANDU VALLEY, NEPAL
ด˜^i‰pjF For promoting earthquake disaster management activities at the community level, a pilot study was conducted under gThe study on earthquake disaster mitigation in the Kathmandu Valley (JICA, 2002)h. A social structure survey revealed the fundamental nature of society, and a scientific damage estimation provided actual images of the future earthquake disasters in the Valley. Based on these, after sample communities were selected, numbers of community meetings and drills using the DIG (Disaster Imagination Game) technique were implemented to validate their effectiveness. Technical input, partnership with the local government, utilization of a participatory approach, and DIG were clarified to be effective for enhancing involvement of the community in reducing future disaster effects.
