An oil storage yard in the city of Sakaiminato deploys eight large tanks of which capacity is over 1,000 kl and any of them did not sustain failure even during the Western Tottori prefecture earthquake in 2000. This study aims at examining how strong ground motion these tanks withstood. Since the main-shock seismogram was not recorded at the tank yard, we estimated the waveform of ground motion by using the empirical Green function method and the equivalent linearization analysis. The peak ground acceleration and velocity were estimated to be about 2.5 m/s2 and about 0.58 m/s, respectively. We then evaluated response of the tanks with reference to hoop tension stress of shell plate, its axial compression stress and annular plate strength. The results agree with the fact that no failure occurred.
