Two big earthquakes hit the Chugoku District of Midwestern Japan recently : the Tottoriken-seibu earthquake (M7.3) on 6 October 2000, the 2001 Geiyo earthquake on 24 March 2001. We reported that we investigated slope failures. Investigations were made on 136 slope failures in the 2000 Tottoriken-seibu earthquake and 112 slope failures in the 2001 Geiyo earthquake. In many cases, the root systems of trees like pines entered the joint planes and caused bedrock failure. This paper discusses the slope failures caused by these two earthquakes based on their failure types, and describes their characteristics.
