During Niigata earthquake in 1964, many structures were damaged. Above all, reinforced concrete buildings in the city of Niigata subsided or tilted with no structural damage to the superstructures. This is because the ground lost its bearing capacity as a result of liquefaction of alluvial sand. This study investigates the relations between the damage to reinforced concrete buildings and the degree of liquefaction based on the damage data of the buildings and newly collected bore-hole data in Niigata city. Correlations between building settlements, structural features of the buildings, and the degree of liquefaction are specially focused by taking into consideration soil characteristics, lateral flow displacements, etc.
