抄録(英): Natural sand deposits normally consist of many sublayers different in permeability. If it liquefies, pore water accumulates beneath layers of low permeability, and forms water films. It is highly probably that the water film effect considerably affects the lateral flow that results in serious damage in recent earthquakes. In this research, 1-dimensional soil models of saturated loose sands consisting of different sublayers were made in a lucite tube and liquefied to investigate the mechanism of water film generation. In the most cases, water films were formed beneath less permeable seams or sublayers and stayed for some time, indicating that water films are actually formed in the field during liquefaction and considerably affect the lateral flow mechanism.
