LIQUEFACTION TENDENCY OF GROUND REINFORCED BY PRE-FABRICATED VERTICAL DRAIN

We have developed a ground improvement method using pre-fabricated vertical drain (hereafter referred to as PBD) against liquefaction. In this method, the improvement effects both by drainage and reinforcement are expected. This research examined the improvement effects experimentally. First, shaking table tests were conducted in order to check the combined effects of drainage and reinforcement of PBD. Test results suggested that the resistance of ground against liquefaction is remarkably improved by PBD. Next, simple shear tests were conducted to examine the reinforcement effect. The test showed that the reinforcement effect is most demonstrated by fixing lower part of PBD to the base and by restraining PBD head using geogrid.
