Attenuation characteristics of peak ground acceleration and velocity are examined based on strong motion recordings from 33 Japanese earthquakes. From the regression analysis, it is revealed that the attenuation rate for deeper earthquakes is substantially larger than that for shallow earthquakes. Considering the different attenuation rates, the attenuation relationships for peak ground acceleration and velocity, which are applicable to both shallow and deeper earthquakes, are proposed.
