We investigate effects of the upper mantle Qs structure on strong ground motions in the eastern part of Hokkaido. First, we investigate strong motion records and their S-wave spectra for two intermediate-depth earthquakes with different focal depths. The S-wave spectra at stations north of the volcanic front(V.F.) show different features depending on the focal depth. Next, we estimate Qs values for three zones, south and north zones of the V.F. using data from intermediate-depth events, and upper part of the plate using data observed at ocean bottom stations. The results show that Qs values in three zones are not so different for frequencies less than 2 Hz. However, effect of Low-Q in the north of the V.F. becomes strong at frequencies higher than 2Hz.
