In order to evaluate the local site effects on ground motion and building damage in Hiroshima city during the 2001 Geiyo earthquake, microtremor measurements are conducted at 36 sites. The predominant periods from microtremor show good agreement with those from weak-motion record. However, due to the nonlinear soil behavior during the strong ground shaking, the predominant periods during the main shock become long compared with those from microtremor and weak-motion record. Most of the heavily damaged buildings are found at delta where the ground motion with the period of 1 sec is dominant during the Geiyo earthquake.
