Ground strains calculated by using ground velocities during earthquake

Ground strains during an earthquake were calculated by using seismic records of ground velocity. Direct earthquake observation of ground strains having 1m-gauge length has been conducted. In order to obtain ground strain with longergauge length, three velocity seismographs were driven at three points which corresponded to the vertices of an equilateral triangle of side 15m. By integrating observed ground velocities, relative displacements were obtained in three directions. Comparison of the calculated strains with the directly observed ones showed good agreement.
