Described are results of in-situ penetration test and soil profiling in the Adapazari city, Turkey, where significant damage occurred during the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake. Detailed investigation on damaged and undamaged structures suggests that damage is strongly related to the geotechnical conditions. Standard penetration test and Swedish sounding tests are conducted at several sites in downtown Adapazari. Comparison between the relationship between penetration resistance and SPT N-values developed in Japan and those in Turkey indicates that energy absorption in Turkey is 50% of that in Japan. Subsurface structure is evaluated based on corrected in-situ test result.
