As an introduction of this paper, history of structural optimization technique including operations researches are investigated. Development of the method in Japan including the achievement in JSCE are given. Several topics in structural optimization, aseismic design of suspension bridges, optimum design of cable stayed bridges, and optimum aseismic design level of structures are discussed. Future trends of structural optimization are investigated.
