In this study, we conducted a questionnaire survey in Okushiri island that suffered severe tsunami damage due to the 1993 Hokkaido Nansei-oki earthquake. 234 people lost their lives by this earthquake. Especially, at Aonae in Okushiri town, 7.6% of inhabitants were killed. We investigated the causes of casualty and the relationship between death ratio and age/sex. Moreover, we seeked to clarify the behavior during and after the earthquake. Almost all of people in Aonae evacuated to the hill on foot or by car.
