A shell model can take consideration of deformation and hoop stress of the pipe cross-section in a seismic response analysis of buried lifelines.The present paper proposes a theory and computational technique to calculate the response of buried straight and bent pipelines modeled in shell pipe-segments and joints.A modified transfer matrix method has been employed instead of a stiffness matrix method to avoid an accuracy problem caused by large matrixes. Calculated results by the developed computer program were compared with experimental results and/or computational ones by a beam theory.
