A hybrid mass damper with convertible active and passive modes using a multistage rubber bearing and a hydraulic actuator was developed. This mass damper can work mainly as an active one to effectively control relatively small vibrations of a building caused by winds and weak earthquakes. At the same time, it can work as a passive one and can maintain its damper function against strong earthquakes. The active-passive mode switching rules and a variable feedback gain control law were adopted. In order to confirm effectiveness of these methods, shaking table tests were carried out for a building model with a mass damper on the roof. The tests results showed that the hybrid mass damper with the active-passive mode switching rules and the variable gain control law had good performance throughout a wide range of excitation intensity.
