In this study, effects of active variable stiffness bearings (AVSB) and joint dampers (JD) to reduce seismic response of bridge girders are numerically investigated. Firstly, earthquake response of a simple bridge girder model with AVSB of which stiffness can be changed with relatively simple mechanism and very low energy is examined. The most effective stiffness is actively selected to introduce the minimum earthquake energy into the structure. The results show that the maximum displacement response and the total input energy are reduced to 50% of those without the control. Secondly, in addition to AVSB, JD is installed between the adjacent girders to increase energy absorbing capacity of the total system. This system is schematically illustrated in Fig.9. Displacement response of the mass number 1 and 2 with and without the control is compared. It is clearly found that displacement response of both mass is effectively reduced. Total input energy to the system is found to be reduced to 40% of that without the control.
