A 2DOF structure with uniaxial eccentricity is actively controlled by only one control force under an earthquake excitation. The state feedback control law is represented in a closed from by the pole assignment method Uncontrollability means that a participation factor for a controller is zero at the centers of torsion. Velocity-feedback control can only reduce the vibration in either the lateral or torsional direction. The signs of the feedback gains change at the centers of torsion as the location of the controller moves. The resonance curve shows the optimal location of the controller for simultaneously reducing the vibrations in both directions.
