A new TMD-type device to control bridge vibrations due to earthquake is presented. The outline of the device is introduced first. Then, the structural model, equation of motion and the method of optimum tuning for the device are described. Earthquake response analyses using a simple model for the bridge, to which the proposed device is applied, are carried out, and the results are compared with cases in which no control device and a conventional passive TMD device is applied.
