Breaking of laminated rubber bearings should be prevented by using back-up devices because it may lead to fatal damage of a base-isolated structure. Shaking table tests were conducted with a scale model of an actual building provided with back-up devices (hereinafter called "the stopper") that restrains excessive deformation of the laminated rubber bearings. And also simulation analyses were performed to investigate the effects of the stopper on superstructures and its validity from a viewpoint of design criteria. The result suggests that the proposed stopper is very effective for preventing fracture of the laminated rubber bearings and the seismic safety margin of a base-isolated structure could be improved.
