The purpose of this paper is to develop an analytical approach to random response of multi-story base isolated structures (base isolation system) with viscous damping and hysteretic damping characteristics. The stochastic second order moments of an earthquake response of base isolation system are obtained by solving a simple simultaneous first order algebriaic equation. The optimum damping characterisitics of base isolation systems are determined by the solution of an extreme value problem for the objective function defined as the combination of the stochastic earthquake response of superstructures. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
