Nonstationary frequency properties observed in real strong earthquake ground motions are determined through an evolutionary spectral analysis. The motions arc classified into five groups according to their time dependent patterns of nonstationary spectral contents. Inelastic responses of structures with various hysteresis models arc evaluated. The results reveal the evidence that nonstationary spectral contents included in earthquake motions produce inelastic responses so as the resultant equivalent period of structural response to coincide with the dominant period of motion within duration of excitation, indicating the potentiality that the nonstationary frequency properties of earthquake motion can develop excessively large responses for stiffness deteriorating structures. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
