Pile foundation responses during strong earthquakes are greatly affected by nonlinear soil-pile foundation interaction. Centrifuge tests indicated that further complicated interaction between piles and surrounding soiI occurs in liquefiable sand because of pore water pressure generation. This paper describes the earthquake response of a structure on pile foundation in liquefied sand deposit using a simplified numerical model. The effects of the inertial and kinematic interactions on pile responses are investigated. Analytical method to evaluate pile stresses induced by earthquake is also discussed.
