Presented are alternative solution methods for the analysis of the transient response of a buried tunnel structure in an irregular alluvium deposits due to certain incident waves. The out-of-plane motion is considered. One method is a hybrid formulation which formulates the near field including the buried structure by the FEM and the extending far field by the BEM. The weighted residual technique is employed for their coupling. The other method, which is more oriented to the practical procedure, uses a Winkler type soil spring as evaluated based on the plane strain assumption. Investigation is focused on the structural response in the interaction with the neighboring soil with due attention to the traveling waves affected by the site topography. The computation is performed for the representative nondimensional frequency which is defined as the ratio between the surface width of the alluvium and the incident wave length. Some findings from the parameter study are pointed out as useful engineering information for the seismic design of the concerned structure. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
