A series of dynamic model experiments have been performed with respect to dynamic behavior of models of a rock-fill dam which is being planned to be constructed on a thick soil deposit in the western mountainous area of China. Dynamic response characteristics of both the free field and the dam on its foundation were observed by means of several tests on models made of gelatin. Failure process of dam models made of sandy gravel were studied by giving their bases the shakes of some recorded earthquakes.
