Earthquake observation and microtremor observation were conducted at the site of the retaining wall with expanded polystyrol (EPS) backfill. The EPS was adopted since the bearing capacity of the site is not large enough for an ordinary soil embankement. The Fourier spectrum ratios of observed records were calculated between locations of accelerometers. Slight non-linearity was seen in the earthquake response by comparing with the results of the microtremor. A finite element analysis in the frequency domain was also conducted by modeling the site as plain strain. The results of the analysis agreed reasonably well with the observation. A further study on stability of the retaining wall is suggested considering all the forces acting on the embankment-retaining wall system.
