Shaking table tests using three model grounds were performed to study the effect of the density of liquefiable ground on the stability of common utility ducts against uplift during earthquakes. Finite element analyses in terms of the excess pore water pressure and the permanent deformation were conducted to investigate their applicability in simulating the shaking table test results. These analyses were applied to predict the stability of common utility ducts of actual size buried in sandy ground where the distribution of the liquefaction resistance varied in the vertical direction.
