The authors conducted experimental studies on effectiveness of in-ground membrane walls as a countermeasure against liquefaction-induced large ground displacement and uplift of in-ground structures. From a series of shaking table tests the following results were obtained: 1) Membrane walls with comparatively low strength and stiffness can control liquefaction-induced ground displacement, and the load on the membrane during the ground displacement which depends on the vertical difference of the ground surface between up-stream and down-stream sides of the wall, is enough small for practical application of the membrane wall. 2) Membrane wails enclosing in-ground structures can stop flow of soil and water into the bottom of the structures, and are highly effective to prevent uplift of in-ground structures.
