Laboratory cyclic shear tests are commonly used to obtain dynamic soil properties for seismic response analyses. As limited numbers of tests are allowed because of cost, there is a concern whether these tests are adequate or not. Then, cyclic torsional shear tests on 80 undisturbed specimens taken continuously in depth at one borehole were conducted to study appropriate numbers of cyclic shear tests for seismic response analyses. Test results showed that the dynamic shear modulus and damping ratio vary with depth, even in a homogeneous soil layer, and vary discontinuously at some boundaries of soil layers.
