It is generally understood that response spectra of periods near the natural period of surface layers are damped more than those at other periods. When damping ratio of the response spectrum increases the shape of the response spectra approaches to that at bedrocks. On the basis of this understanding, if we have seismic records at the surface, we can readily estimate amplification factors of the surface layers from response spectral ratios of velocity response spectra with small damping to that of large damping ratio. Numerical results demonstrate that estimated predominant period by the proposed method agrees well with the natural period of surface layers.
