抄録（英）：
Damage patterns of chimneys due to the 1976 Tangshan, China, earthquake showed a remarkable tendency, ie., collapse at lower part of chimneys in a zone close to the fault and collapse at higher part in a zone a little distant from it. The chimneys were modeled as 51 masses connected by 50 beams and a soil-structure interaction element. The results of the response of the models to the strong ground motions previously estimated at the four stations by a semi-empirical method were consistent with the observed damage patterns, indicating the validity of the estimated strong ground motions.
