Strong motion records observed at Gifu station during main shock and 8 aftershocks of the 1923 Kanto earthquake and those of recent 8 earthquakes which occurred near the focal region of the main shock are digitized. Many of these waveforms are characterized during 20s after S-wave arrival by large phases due to structures along the wave propagating path from Southern Kanto to Gifu. Strong motion waveform of the main shock suggests a large energy release with a short duration in the focal process of the Kanto earthquake.
