S-wave velocity profiles were estimated from a dispersion analysis of Love waves observed in the Kanto basin during a shallow event near the Izu Peninsula on Feb./20/1990. Using the S-wave velocity profiles, synthetic Love waves were generated by two-dimensional numerical modeling. The duration of the synthetics was evaluated to be shorter than the observation. The subsurface structures around the Kanto basin were also deduced by the dispersion analysis. The sub-surface structure in the eastern part of the Sagami bay is characterized by an existence of deep sediments. The sediments become thinner in Izu Peninsula. This difference can be attributed to the misfit of the synthetic seismograms in the Kanto basin.
