Based on the observed accelerograms and soil boring log data, ground response characteristics in Kushiro city during the 1993 Kushiro-oki Earthquake are estimated by nonlinear response analysis procedure. Results of the calculation show that the maximum response acceleration values in Kushiro city, especially on thick soft sandy deposits of western alluvium part of the city, were not so large comparing to the observed ones at the Meteorological Observatory. This may be one of the dominant reason for rather few building damage caused by the earthquake, despite the destructive value of observed accelerograms and intensity.
