Seismic waves observed at a 3-station array system in the Kanto sedimentary basin were analyzed to study predominant later phases whose period range was between 2 - 5 s. Later phases of three earthquakes were investigated and the following conclusions were obtained: 1)Later phases consist of several body wave groups and surface wave groups. These surface waves are mainly the first higher mode and/or the fundamental mode of Rayleigh waves. 2)Most of the Rayleigh wave groups are excited by incident waves at the edge of the basin and they propagate stably in the basin. 3)Body waves appeared in the later part obviously show some scattering characteristics.
