Lognormal kriging procedure is proposed for placing strategically seismic sensors. Since the kriging variance does not depend on the ground motions at the observed sites, this is chosen as the criterion to be minimized. The construction of an optimal spatial sampling design of size k reduces to finding the best k sites from among all ■ Possible sampling plans. Computational savings are obtained by the genetic algorithm based on the mechanics of natural genetics. Numerical examples show that this algorithm is successfully applied to optimum spatial sampling plan.
