We examine the non-linearity of surficial layers using vertical-array data at four sites, comparing strong-motion and weak-motion spectral ratios ( surface /underground ). A numerical code for calculating time-domain responses of the non-linerity is used to examine an empirical initial loading curve derived from the laboratory measurements appropriate for our sites. We discuss factors owing mainly to the non-linearity such as peak accelerations, soil conditioans, and strain level. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
