Ground strains produced during earthquakes are required to be studied for examining aseismicity of underground structures. Then, we took direct measurements of surface ground strains during earthquakes, and investigated the properties of such strains. Relative displacements in three directions between piles were observed. The study results of these records indicate that ground strain condition seems to be in the state of pure shearing, and directions of principal strains are likely to be same for all the records. Also, we examined the relations between invariant of strains and various parameters such as ground accelerations, the epicentral distances and the magnitudes.
