In 1993, three strong earthquakes hitted on Japan island; The Kushiro-oki. Noto-Hanto-oki and Hokkaido-Nansei-oki Earthquakes. The Kuriro-oki Earthquake we investigated took place in the south-eastern part of Hokkaido prefecture, in the evening of 15 January 1993. The maximum acceleration recorded at the surface ground of the Kushiro Branch of JMA was over 700 cm/sec■. Two persons died; 966 was injured. 53 houses collapsed and 5565 damaged. The objective of this paper is to clarify why the damage to wooden houses was so slight or so severe. 683 damaged houses in Kushiro are analyzed and compared with house in Suzu hitted by the Noto Quake. The effects of shear wall ratio of wooden structure, soil failure and construction method of foundation are discussed
