Seismic damage to a buried pipeline occured due to the Hokkaido Nansei-Oki earthquake in 1993. From the results of investigation of pipeline at the Kitashiyama district, it was revealed that the segmented pipe suffered serious damage including a number of slip-outs of mechanical joints. We have observed large relative displacement at the joints of which near the concrete structure, manhole and thrustbock, some of which were pulled out up to 100cm for example and 50 pipes, about 200m line were surfacing 50cm and 100cm within the backfill materials. This significant discrepancy and surfacing of sgmented pipes may imply the possibility of the liquefaction -induced effects to be a main cause of the damage to the buried pipes
