In this paper a simplified method is proposed for predicting probable liquefaction-induced settlements in saturated sand deposits during earthquakes. The method involves the use of empirical equations developed from previous laboratory tests which show that shear strains control settlement and pore pressure build-up in sands during cyclic loading. Comparison of the calculated settlements using these equations with actual field observations during previous earthquakes in Japan indicates that the proposed method can be useful in assessing the potential damage which may be expected at any given Bite during earthquakes. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
