Characteristics of vertical earthquake motions including primary portion have not been examined enough so far. The earthquake records, which contain the primary portion as well as the main shock part, obtained from array observation are selected in this study. Dividing these acceleration time histories into two parts (primary and secondary arrivals of wave trains), which are assumed to be composed of P and SV-wave, the characteristics of the wave form, the maximum value and their ratios of above two parts in horizontal and vertical directions are studied in relation to attenuation and magnitude. Moreover, these ratios are compared with the theoretical ratios on incident P and SV-wave into the free surface of a homogeneous half space. From the result of these examinations, it comes to a conclusion that P-portion cannot be ignored in vertical motions. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
