Strong-ground motions focussing on vertical components due to the 1979 Imperial Valley earthquake are simulated using aftershock records. Assuming the heterogeneous faulting model, the irregularities are obtained by the optimization of the synthetic model on Fourier amplitude ratios between mainshock and aftershock records. In synthesizing vertical motions. P and S waves are considered and the effects of the quality factor and the incident angle of the wave are examined. Through the simulation it was found that synthetic vertical motions at sites except El Centro array sites near the Imperial fault relatively well represent the characteristics of real accelerograms such as spectral intensity. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
